We unravel the essence of what it truly feels like to be part of the community, exploring things to which only PUP students can relate. Prepare to dive deep into the heart of PUPians' lives as we discover the enthralling faces of diversity that make this university one-of-a-kind, one thread at a time.
PUP is 'Pila Ulit, Pila'
As one of the most populated state universities in the Philippines, the phrase, "Pila ulit, pila" is one that PUP students are all too familiar with. It is the sight of long lines that has become a normal part of life on this populated campus. Waiting in line for hours, whether for enrollment, transactions, or events, has become a shared experience that embodies the patience of PUPians.
'Paypay Ulit, Paypay!'
"Paypay ulit, Ppaypay” – an expression that captures the daily struggle of PUP students enduring the scorching heat. With few electric fans as a common sight, PUPians have learned to adapt to the sweltering weather, often seen fanning themselves with haggard looks on their faces. This reveals a clear representation of the university's inadequate facilities—a clear reminder of the pressing need for improved resources to create a more comfortable and conducive learning environment.
Fort Santiago in PUP?!
When PUP students say, "Tara sa Fort Santiago," they are not referring to the Intramuros fortress. Instead, they refer to the massive wall that encircles the university lagoon and is strikingly similar to Fort Santiago's appearance. For PUPians, this distinctive campus icon has taken on a distinctive identity.
Lagoon-tastic Canteen Central
Nestled within the confines of the Great Wall lies the iconic PUP Lagoon. True to its name, a literal lagoon graces the center, creating an oasis amidst the bustling campus. This lagoon, which also serves as both the center of PUP and the campus canteen, is a gathering place where PUPians may unwind, enjoy their meals, and take a breather from the demands of their courses.
FEWA Frenzy
Of course, this classic footlong sandwich, the 'Footlong Egg Wrapped Around' or commonly known as FEWA, will never be excluded from the list. This creative dish, which is wrapped with delectable scrambled eggs, has gained popularity on campus. Many PUPians buy this delicious treat from lagoon sellers, as it now boasts an affordable price tag, making it a go-to choice.
Catwalk-side Stumble
For some PUPians, walking through University Avenue while crossing along the Catwalk can be quite a careful act, as uneven pavements demand careful attention to avoid stumbling. This quirky reminder has become a symbol of the campus, reminding everyone to watch their step while navigating the dynamic environment of PUP.
Scentsational Riverside Retreat
The Pasig River view from Linear Park continues to be a favorite hangout for PUPians despite the occasional bad stench. It provides a peaceful retreat from the academic rat race where students may unwind and connect with the picturesque scenery. It is located next to the winding riverfront.
Choo-Choo Chaos
For PUP students, the sound of passing trains has become a common background noise. The train's rumbling is just one of the many sounds that students have grown accustomed to on campus because the Philippine National Railways (PNR) runs beside the campus.
'No HDF, No Entry'
Along with the 'No ID, No Entry Policy,' the Health Declaration Form (HDF) has become an essential part of PUPians' daily routine due to the pandemic. With this, students must be prepared to show their HDF to the campus security staff before entering. This safety procedure serves as a reminder of everyone's duty to protect the health of the PUP community.
Outfit-of-the-Day Extravaganza
Red, orange, yellow, green, purple, blonde, and such hair colors are allowed on campus! You don’t need to worry if you still don’t dye your hair to its natural color because any hair color is accepted and is normal for them. Even if you have a LOT of piercings, tattoos, it doesn't matter because your physical appearance won’t affect your academic performance!
Students have the liberty to express themselves through their fashion choices because most PUP programs do not enforce rigorous uniform requirements. This freedom to express one's distinctive style adds to the diverse and vibrant school culture.
BS Org Mania
With a wide variety of clubs available, many PUPians enthusiastically engage in multiple organizations, immersing themselves in a world of extracurricular pursuits and networking opportunities. This has led students to humorously refer to themselves as majoring in "BS Org," with PUP being a nurturing ground for various organizations.
Activism Avenue
This is undoubtedly the most well-known item to which any PUPian can relate, as PUP is renowned for its activism culture and its students have a strong commitment to upholding students' rights. PUPians' dedication to having a positive impact on society is seen in their commitment and bravery in supporting numerous causes. By empowering each student to be a catalyst for change, this unwavering heart of activism not only establishes PUP's identity but also makes the university truly student-centered.
These are just 12 of the innumerable things that were never mentioned, bursting with unparalleled faces of diversity that build a vivid portrayal of what it feels like to be a PUPian. It is the synthesis of these items that makes PUP a place unlike any other, where every student's narrative intertwines, adding color to the fabric of campus life.
And like the threads in a tapestry, our unique experiences at this university entwine to form compelling stories that reveal the soul of this relatable melting pot of excellence, making it a one-of-a-kind community, one thread at a time.
