Entering college is like stepping onto a blank canvas. Each stride inside university gates adds a brushstroke to our future. It begins with the adrenaline of the “first-day high,” transitions through stressful evenings of backlogs, and culminates to the anxious completion of requirements.
Everything was a fleeting moment, yet memories that have been etched into one’s life. Undeniably, college was years of transformative growth, during which lifelong friendships were formed, and new perspectives were embraced. But what grand adventures await us beyond the university’s hallowed halls?
Strangely tranquil
Gone were the days of waking up with the weight of unfinished academic tasks tangled with other responsibilities. The sense of strangeness lingers—we no longer need to rush to school or grind relentlessly to outpace the deadlines.
The familiar routines of college life have given way to a new reality, where the urgency of finding a stable nine-to-five job now looms large. This transition marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another—a phase often romanticized as the gateway to the real world.
In pursuit of financial stability, the responsibilities of “adulting” take the center stage. The once-distant concept of securing a steady income now becomes an immediate concern, together with the duty to support our family through bills and expenses. These, though daunting, carry a sense of purpose and determination, reminding us that the skills and knowledge acquired during our academic journey are now to be put to practical use in the real world.
The bittersweet reality is that a significant portion of the paycheck we will earn will contribute directly to achieving financial independence, making it increasingly tangible. This shift in perspective undoubtedly stirs a mix of emotions—excitement for the opportunities ahead and apprehension for the challenges yet to be faced.
Struggle of ‘Sepanx’
Some wish to extend their academic journey, perhaps due to “sepanx” (separation anxiety) from the corners of learning, or simply to deepen their expertise in their chosen fields.
For them, the intellectual camaraderie found within university walls is difficult to detach from. The experience of cultivating ideas alongside like-minded peers and mentors enriches both personal growth and aspirations.
The chance to delve deeper into niche areas briefly touched upon during undergraduate education may enable us to specialize further. This preparation can also enhance our readiness to advance in our careers.
Moreover, those who are fortunate to have the means can go back to their original fields of interest if their initial path diverges from their true passions. Such opportunities are rare and cherished, allowing for a return to the roots of their dreams.
The willingness to adapt and the dedication to continuous learning not only enhance one’s development but also play a crucial role in shaping a vibrant and forward-thinking society. Embracing these opportunities nurtures a profound connection to an individual's area of study and a resolute sense of purpose in pursuing professional endeavors.
Balancing life
Undoubtedly, there’s a certain joy in finally having the time to rest and recharge after years spent tirelessly on rigorous study. It’s a time when we can reconnect with loved ones, taking a well-deserved break from the demands of a busy student life.
This period of respite serves as a precious chance to savor accomplishments and milestones while thinking about future directions. Whether it's enjoying leisurely conversations over a meal, going on spontaneous adventures, or simply cherishing quiet moments at home—moments previously missed—finding this balance is crucial for a fulfilling life.
After graduation, we are free to explore our passions and interests that may have been set aside during our studies. Some may choose to dedicate time to hobbies, arts, or sports that hone creativity and were previously neglected.
Gladly, this phase allows for mental and emotional rest. We can leave behind memories of pushing ourselves through countless tasks and deadlines. We can finally decompress from the pressures of exams and time limits to promote holistic well-being.
However, as we look at our life beyond college with anticipation, it’s important to reflect on and appreciate the wonderful memories we have made along the way. These are the moments spent with our closest friends, our “barkada”—with whom we shared spontaneous activities and made promises for future outings—the cute moments of “tara” and “next time na lang.” These experiences were often accompanied by the challenge of budgeting our allowances to make it last through the week.
We can also never forget the misunderstandings and disagreements which were hopefully overshadowed by the deep connections developed throughout the years. These were the times when we learned the ups and downs of relationships and discovered the true meaning of friendship and loyalty.
All of these moments were not just about escapades; they were about learning life lessons and building lasting bonds that have shaped who we are today. These golden memories will always hold a special place in our hearts, serving as a nostalgic reminder of the carefree days of youth and the enduring friendships that stood the test of time.
