PUP COMMSOC explores digital arts via CommuniCREATION

PUP Communication Society (CommSoc) conducted a digital arts webinar and competition entitled, “CommuniCREATION: Exploring the Vivid World of Digital Arts” last June 27 via Facebook Live and ZOOM conference.

In the webinar portion, illustrator and freelance graphic designer Chynna Cosme served as the first speaker who spoke about her realization that graphic design is her passion; and how she believed that 'experience is the best teacher.’

"People should seize opportunities without hesitation because they do not come to everyone,” said Cosme during her talk.

She also pointed out that criticism is beneficial to art because it helps them to improve their work and deal with creative burnout. She also shared that ideas can be found anywhere, including on social media.

Meanwhile, PUP Professor and second speaker Christwin Felix began his presentation by discussing the six types of multimedia: text, image, audio, video, animation, and interactivity. He shared his experiences and tips on multimedia, specifically about animation and digital arts.

He provided tips and actions the artists can do if someone plagiarized their works. However, he asserted that when the artist posted their artwork, it was automatically copyrighted.

The event also opened a digital art competition entitled, “Digital ARTvocacy: Turn your Imagination into Digital Illustration," where John Hipolito, Bella Merced, Ezekhyna Naval, Carl Joshua Bunuan, and Turon (pseudonym) participated to show their own advocacies through their digital artworks.

“As global citizens, we must take action now. Let’s protect mother nature or we will become extinct in the future,” said John Hipolito in his artwork presentation named “The Eye of the Future," which promotes his environmental advocacy.

Second ARTvocacy participant Carlo Joshua Bunuan created "Nene"—a digital art of a stray dog that his family fed when they saw it outside of their house. Bunuan criticized how Aspins (Asong Pinoy) are neglected in the streets because of their breeding.

Bella Merced, the third competing artist, illustrated "Noong si Juan ay nagtanim sa kalsada", where she depicted the struggle of local farmers in the Philippines and emphasized that the farmers are continuously being left behind.

Turon's "Queen of Hearts", a card-like digital artwork that advocates for anti-discrimination of transgender people; and Ezekhyna Naval's "Exploration through the Different Doorways of Realities," which promotes new technologies in groundwork research studies were also presented by the hosts of the webinar.

In the final leg of the event, People's Choice Awards was awarded to Hipolito's "Eye of the Future" artwork, which gained 47 shares, 84 comments, and 166 reactions; and the Best Digital Award to Bella Merced's "Noong si Juan ay nagtanim sa kalsada," which obtained a total score of 95.5 percent.

The PUP CommSoc webinar ended with a speech from one of the event organizers, which highlighted the significance of artwork in giving a deep message and inspiration for all different artworks.
