In celebration of broadcasting's 100th anniversary in the Philippines, the PUP BroadCircle conducted a discussion webinar with the theme "BrodKast Pinas! Balagtasin at Alamin ang Philippine Broadcasting," via Zoom and Facebook Live to highlight the significance of broadcasting and journalism in the rise of fake news on Saturday, July 30.
Chair of UP’s 100 Years of Broadcasting in the Philippines, Professor Elizabeth Enriquez officially started the discussion by reminiscing about the birth of broadcasting in the Philippines.
She revisited how broadcasting began as part of the goals of the conquerors to change and introduce foreign culture to the Filipinos.
Enriquez also tackled the history of broadcasting, and how the conquerors tried to change the language used as the medium of communication.
Moreover, she talked about the changes in the form of the broadcasting industry over time; the use of different mediums to deliver facts, and the challenges society faces when facts are distorted.
Meanwhile, Rappler journalist and PUP Professor Jairo Bolledo was the resource speaker of the event, in which he provided an insightful discussion about the background of news and the basics of news writing.
“Hindi porket madali siya, hindi porket basic siya ay siya na pinakamadali, unfortunately that’s not the truth," Prof. Bolledo said while pertaining to news writing.
He provided the definition of news, and introduced digital journalism and platforms, as well as how it can be maximized in creating content and noteworthy information.
He also discussed and provided tips and techniques for writing the headline, lead, subhead, body, and end/context.
After the discussion came an online recreation, where participants had to guess the broadcasters through their voice or parts of the body.
The webinar ended with a 'question-and-answer portion. The professor shared his career experiences, pieces of advice, his passion and love for journalism, as well as his stance on social issues in the present.
