NEWS | PUP CORE welcomes DCR freshmen in a two-day virtual GA

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Circle of Research Enthusiasts (PUP CORE) spearheaded a two-day virtual general assembly entitled, "Diary ng CommRes: A Fresh Snapshot of Newly COMMstructed Perspective and Experiences," to welcome the freshmen students of the College of Communication - Department of Communication Research (COC - DCR).

The event was initially scheduled on October 28-29. However, the organization later announced the postponement of Day 2, and rescheduled it on November 7 due to Typhoon Paeng.

The assembly began with DCR chair Dr. Rudolf Anthony Lacerna, a speaker, discussing the updates and changes in the course curriculum of the department.

He mentioned that the subjects related to data analytics applied in communication research are added to the curriculum, upon the mandate of PUP and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), in support of the needs of the industry.

In the updated curriculum, he also explained that the Introduction to Broadcasting, Media Research, and Media Construction and Deconstruction, which are subjects taken by the students separately in the old curriculum, will be combined as one subject due to similarities in course requirements.

Dr. Lacerna also shared other courses and corresponding job skill targets for each year, as well as the existing projects of the department, including: Kasarian, Abilidad, Pamayanan, At Extensyon (K.A.P.E. Project), Pandaigdigang Ugnayan Projects in Communication Research (PUP ComRes), A-Peer Tayo, and Project Sayutsot.

“[Ang] mga activities n’yo na pwede ninyong maisama or dapat naka-align dito [sa mga proyekto ng DCR] para aligned tayo from the institutional level, to the college level, to the department level,” Dr. Lacerna added about choosing events that match to the required job targets.

Meanwhile, Ma. Gheia Arrianne Marañon, a guest speaker, an alumna, and former CORE President, enumerates the significance of communication research and her experiences in the program.

Marañon, as she shares her journey as a CommRes student, admitted she had to put extra effort to enjoy the program.

“Remember this: you’re not working in silos. You have to make the most out of your university experience. May it be online or offline, try to connect for you to understand and to hear more opinions and mindsets.”

She also advised the freshmen CommRes students about asking questions to gain knowledge, balancing social connections, and taking time for hobbies and passion.

Alongside PUP CORE in the event organization is UNDERSCORE, the official student publication arm of the PUP - DCR.

Althea Belle Agustin, President of the PUP CORE also shared insightful messages with the freshmen CommRes students and introduced some events conducted by the group.

Aside from interesting discussions from the speakers, the general assembly was also filled with fun games, sharing of experiences and expectations from freshmen students, and new officers of CORE who took the oath of the preamble of the organization.

PUP CORE is the premier academic organization of the Department of Communication Research of PUP that advocates for progress and peace by organizing various innovative programs that will hone the character, passion, and holistic thinking of students.

The organization also encouraged CommRes students to participate in the officership of the organization by registering through the link provided in their social media accounts. The link is open from November 7-11, 2022.
