A huge win!
The Communicator delegates won awards representing the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) at the Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc. (OSSEI) National Conference on Campus Journalism and 19th Writing Competition at the Crown Legacy Hotel, Baguio City, from March 13 to 15.
Feature Editor Gerie Marie Consolacion bagged championship in Feature Writing, garnering 95 points in her piece composed in Filipino, titled “Sa Piling ng mga Nanlaban,” tackling ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest before the International Criminal Court (ICC) and his bloody war on drugs.
“They did a vernacular which means they wrote a story in Filipino. Ang ganda ng latag… Well-guided ‘yong mata ko kung ano ‘yong ginamit nila at ano ‘yong ginamit nila sa AI, at ano ‘yong nakuha nila sa AI,” said Liana M. Barro, Far Eastern University (FEU) journalism professor and judge for feature writing.
Prof. Barro permitted the participants to use artificial intelligence (AI) for fact sourcing, emphasizing the importance of fact-checking to build the understanding that AI should serve as a tool in journalism, not a replacement for journalists.
Meanwhile, Cathlyn Keshel De Raya received 1st Honorable Mention in Page Design and Layout, ranking as the top honorable mention among around fifteen participants in this category.
De Raya completed her piece within the allotted two-hour timeframe, focusing on formatting articles and creating infographics that highlight the status of AI in Philippine academic institutions.
This year marks PUP’s first participation in the competition, joining other categories such as news reporting, editorial writing, multimedia journalism, development reporting, and editorial cartooning.
Prior to the competitions, campus journalists from various universities nationwide were honed by resource speakers Jamela Alindogan from Bilyonaryo Network, Dir. Alexander Ramos of Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), Prof. Ben Domingo Jr. of CHED Technical Committee in Journalism, Dr. Danilo Arao of UP Diliman College of College of Media and Communication, visual journalist and DLSU lecturer Jimmy Domingo, Dr. Regidor Gaboy of Central Luzon State University, Prof. Barro of FEU, and Ever Samson of DepEd Cabanatuan City.
OSSEI is an organization that provides campus journalism training and workshops for tertiary-level education.
