NEWS | National artist tells audience: look for unrecognized stories

National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee pushes aspiring filmmakers to look for stories that are unrecognized by the majority, after Film Aficionados Circle (FILAC) held its first onsite session of PelikuLearn at the Audio-Visual Room of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – College of Communication last Saturday, February 11.

In the session "Anong Meron sa Wala: Storytelling for Film," Lee, the guest speaker, shared tips on storytelling and capturing the audience's emotions.

Lee said in the discussion that every story has an incomplete character who is trying to find a way to make themselves whole again.

“Lahat ng kuwento ay tungkol sa mga taong hindi pa totally buo at ang journey nila para maging isang buo na tao.”

Lee added that there are stories anywhere that go unnoticed, where the character is on a journey to finding themselves. He stressed that those stories are what the audience can relate to.

He suggested to all aspiring storytellers to find their unique voices and learn from the stories of the previous generations.

“Who you really are as a writer is your tao sa loob, your unique voice. In this generation, you can be your own voice, using your own story to tell it.”

Attendees were given the chance to have a photo opportunity with Lee and get their books signed.

FILAC President Adelbert Abrigonda said that they pushed to hold the session in person despite the convenience of attending the talk virtually.

"Ginagawa namin ito para mas maging komportable sila at magkaroon sila ng driving force [...] para makabuo at gumawa ng mga pelikula. Hindi lang para sa org, hindi lang para sa buong school, kundi para sa buong Pilipinas."

They seek to continue to inspire and teach their members in the field of filmmaking as they live up to their tagline, “Patuloy na ilalathala, pelikulang mapagpalaya."

Abrigonda added that they look to conduct more onsite activities because of the effectiveness of interactivity as the university prepares for the return of students to the campus following the announcement of face-to-face classes.
