JG brings 'Press Express' to Bulacan

Aiming to empower and foster young campus journalists, the PUP Journalism Guild (JG), in partnership with The Communicator and Division of Bulacan’s Guiguinto District, convened “Journeylism Caravan: Express to Excellence” at the Guiguinto District Hall on October 15.

Campus journalists from the College of Communication imparted knowledge on different journalism categories in the caravan, such as news writing, sports writing, editorial writing, feature writing, science writing, copyreading and headline writing, column writing, editorial cartooning, photojournalism, collaborative desktop publishing, and radio broadcasting.

Themed “The Press Express: A Treasure Hunt for Tomorrow’s Storytellers,” the event catered to elementary students and respective school paper advisers from different schools in the district of Guiguinto, Bulacan.

According to JG President Kriza Marielle Sumang, the caravan is a way to give back to the community and teach young campus journalists the true essence of the profession.

“Isang mahalagang layunin din ay ipakita sa kanila na ang pagiging journalist ay hindi lang limitado sa loob ng campus at may mas malawak pa na hamon sa labas,” Sumang emphasized.

In addition, Dulce Amor Rodriguez, JG Vice President for Communication Operations and Project Head of this edition’s Journeylism Caravan, shared that the preparation for the caravan was fast-paced and challenging yet worth it.

“Actually, naging (rushed) ito due to unforeseen circumstances na hindi naman natin maiiwasan. But what's important is the result. Masaya ang lahat at nakatulong kami sa mga bata. In short, it was a great experience for everyone,” Rodriguez said.

The event was also graced by Ma. Neriza Fanuncio, Guiguinto District Supervisor, and Ma. Lilibeth Cervantes, Guiguinto District Coordinator in Campus Journalism (English) by delivering their respective opening and welcoming remarks.

Cervantes thanked the organization for the initiative and encouraged the young journalists by reminding them of their district’s distinct battlecry.

“Basta magaling, sa Guiguinto nanggaling,” Cervantes recited together with the young journalists of the district.

The event concluded with the awarding of certificates and a short photo opportunity.

This is the second journalism caravan the PUP Journalism Guild organized this year. The first caravan was launched at Maypajo High School on March 11.
