Bio-docu ‘EDJOP’ centers COC SC’s Pelikulaban for 38th EDSA PPR

As part of its preparations for the 38th commemoration of EDSA II, the PUP College of Communication Student Council (COC SC) centers on docu-screening “PELIKULABAN” with biopic documentary “Edjop,” a retelling of student leadership and a pursuit for social change during the martial law era, at COC audio-visual room last February 20.

The 1986 film follows the life of student leader Edgar Jopson until his death in September 1982 from military troopers in Davao City. Jopson was an active member of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) during the dictatorship of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

In the talkback session, National Union of Students in the Philippines (NUSP) Spokesperson and former PUP Sentral na Konseho ng Mag-aaral (SKM) President Kirchhoff Angala highlights Jopson’s sacrifices as a ‘great revolutionary,’ leaving affluence in solidarity with the plight of Filipinos during the Marcos Sr. administration.

“Talagang dapat ay maging role model natin si Edgar Jopson lalo na ‘yung ipinakita niyang pagsasakripisyo. Sinakripisyo niya ‘yung oras niya, panahon, [at] kabataan para makapagsilbi sa sambayanan. Kasi nakikita niya ‘yung kasalukuyang kalagayan ‘nung panahon ng martial law ay napakasahol ng nararanasan ng [mga] mamamayan,” Angala pointed out.

Jopson also held the NUSP presidency in 1969, just as Marcos Sr. won his second term and got re-elected in 1971.

On the other hand, PUP Center for Heritage Studies chief Rosemarie Roque emphasized the importance of university archiving and preservation of political heritage in the media. Roque also joined Alternative Horizon’s digital restoration of “Edjop” as the Digital Project Initiator and helped with the film’s transcriptions and translations.

“[Ang] dami pa nating pwede tuklasin na pwedeng interasado ang mga mamamahayag na tulad niyo. Kaya nanawagan ako para sa susunod na mga PUPian, [para] mayroong babalikan na mga nangyari [at] pinag-usapan natin. Dapat itala ‘yan sa mga publication natin, bigyan ang university archives natin. Magtulungan tayo,” Roque urged students as ‘memory keepers.’

Moreover, Altermidya news producer and presenter Niel Eco calls out the cruciality of the student body’s awareness of pressing social issues and the ‘plea for active mobilizations,’ especially in this digital age.

“Kailangan din natin ma-realize na dahil may ginawang atmosphere of aversion towards militance, kailangan natin makiisa sa ‘Tiktok generation’ at kailangan natin gawin ‘yon rapidly. Totoong nakakalugmok siya na ma-realize mong ganito ‘yung reyalidad pero at the same time, sobrang empowering niya kasi alam mong mayroon [kayong] magagawa,” Eco emphasized.

The forum also conducted a short-form content production workshop, which Altermidya’s Eco presided over.

In partnership with Altermidya, the screening is among the student council’s several projects this month, said COC SC President Aem Kimberly Ignacio. The council will also hold an art campaign titled “ARTibismo: Ang Pag-ibig ay Pakikibaka” in celebration of National Arts Month.
