College of Champions: COCians prove excellency at SIKAT Awards ‘24

In celebration of their year-long hard work and different academic accolades, the PUP College of Communication (COC) merited their students’ outstanding efforts during the 2024 SIKAT Awards at the PUP Bulwagang Balagtas on August 17.

Proving the title of “College of Champions,” selected graduating COCians received prestigious awards for the Most Outstanding Graduate Students (MOGS) and the Most Active Graduate Students (MAGS) for the exceptional performance they’ve dedicated to their respective departments. 


Christian O. Bohol of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations (DAPR), together with John Rojell Elizaga from the Department of Journalism (DOJ) and Rovicheds B. Lejano from the Department of Communication Research (DCR), all received the Most Outstanding Graduate Student Awards.


Meanwhile, Elisha Y. Del Rosario (DAPR), along with Camille Angela Zarate (DOJ), and Ezekhyna M. Naval (DCR), were awarded as the Most Active Graduate Students.


BAPR students showcased awardees on their departmental festival, including winners of the 32nd Grand AdClash, where K1DLAT (BAPR 4-1D) was named the overall champion, 3Dent (BAPR 4-3D) was the first runner-up, and YugTwo (BAPR 4-2D) was the second runner-up. 


In addition, Carl Gan Diano (BAPR 4-1D) and Tracy Anne Flores (BAPR 4-3D) both received the awards for Best Presenter.


Meanwhile, third-year students’ 18th Mini AdClash overall champion was hailed to “Attention” (BAPR 3-1D), followed by OverAxis (BAPR 3-3D) for first place, and AdStella (BAPR3-1N) for second place.


Tanglaw ng DAPR special awards for Parangal sa Larangan ng Dangal (Honor), Parangal sa Larangan ng Pamumuno't Paglilingkod (Leadership), and Parangal sa Larangan ng Serbisyo (Serbisyo) were merited to selected students of their department. 


Journalism students also proved their mettle in the fields of documentary, story-telling, special project, magazine, and extracurriculars.

SIKAT Awards 2024 for iCommunicate (iComm) Volume of the Year award was presented to HIBSAY: iCommunicate Vol. 27, for bagging  Best Feature, Best Lifestyle Story, Best Layout, and Best Centerfold. 


Furthermore, iComm for Publication Design for Best News Feature, Best Editorial, Best Literary, and Best in Social Media Execution were awarded to TW!NKLE: iCommunicate Vol. 26.


In addition, Best Community Story, Best Cover, and Best in Marketing awards are given to KOLORETE: iCommunicate Vol. 25.


Moreover, chosen journalism students who excelled in their major subjects gained recognition for their photo essays, data journalism, investigative journalism reports, and environmental stories, which were recently presented at Beyond the Bylines 2024.


Lastly, the “Campus Journalist Award” was granted to Chris Burnet Ramos of BAJ 4-1N, one of the news writers of PUP-COC's official student publication, The Communicator.


Aside from the DOJ, the Department of Communication Research kicked off the People on the Streets (P.O.T.S.) Festival, spotlighting third-year students' superb video entries for their Marketing for Communication Research subject. 


For the PUP Summer P.O.T.S. category, Malamaya Productions bags major SIKAT Awards for Most Liked, Most Viewed, and Overall Best PUP Summer P.O.T.S.


Malamaya Productions also secured awards for the Independence Day P.O.T.S. category for Most Liked and Most Viewed, while Luntiang Retrato received overall Best PUP Independence Day P.O.T.S. 


For the Pride Month P.O.T.S. category, Likhang Isko received the Most Liked award, Malamaya Productions for Most Viewed, and 1Nquestors was named the overall champion. 


CommRes students were also recognized during the event for their outstanding research projects, as recently presented in SALIKSIKAN 2024: A DCR Student Research Colloquium on June 14, with the theme “Strengthening Sustainable Development Through Communication Research.”


The event would not have been completed without the creative minds of broadcasting students, as they received special SIKAT Awards for their cinematic entries during PelikuLakbay 2024. 


Along with that, awardees for Sine at Pagbabago 2024 SIKAT were presented to “Good Morning, Primrose”, “Sa Kislap ng mga Bituin”, and “Summer to Remember” from first to third respectively.

The annual Breakfast TV Festival made it into SIKAT as well, where “Daming Alarm” won first place, “Magandang Agahan” was second, and “Gising, Umaga Na!” was third.


Aside from special awards, SIKAT Awards for President’s and Dean’s Listers were also presented from freshman to senior years, while also paying tribute to graduating students as they make their way into commencement exercises in October. 


The SIKAT Awards, spearheaded by Teatro Komunikado (TK), are one of the events in line with the 23rd Founding Anniversary of PUP COC. The event kicked off with the opening remarks from the newly-instated College of Communication Dean, Dr. Jose Reuben Alagaran II. 


“As we embark on this journey of recognition, let us remember that any of success and stories is a chapter in the larger [community], it is a testament of our culture and nurturing environment [in COC],” Dr. Alagaran II stated.


Dean Alagaran II also pledged at the next SIKAT Awards that he will be giving medals as a merit to student awardees.
