PUP DBC receives CFA excellence award in MIL education

The Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA) awarded the PUP Department of Broadcast Communication (DBC) the “4th Lagerway Awards for Communication in Excellence on Media and Information Literacy Education” on Friday, May 10.

DBC, and its academic organization, the PUP BroadCircle, were recognized as “a strong foundation for the future success of young talents in the field of broadcast communication.”

In his speech, PUP DBC Chairperson Prof. Kim Fajardo highlighted the department’s community extension program, Campus Koneksyon, an educational venture for young broadcasters in secondary schools in dedication “to the enhancement of knowledge, skills, experience, and inspiration amongst aspiring broadcasters.”

“Campus Koneksyon, our extension program, stands as a testament to this dedication. [..] This recognition serves as both inspiration and [a] challenge for us to continue enhancing this extension program with new lectures and strategies to further assist our beneficiaries in Marikina,” he said.

Fajardo received the award at the CFA Hall in Sta. Mesa, Manila with PUP BroadCircle Auditor Francis Andrew Umali.

What’s next for Campus Koneksyon?

“Nakikita naman natin how impactful kapag nagsama-sama ang whole community, ang whole department when it comes to [a] project like this. So, we’re not just establishing a good rapport with each other but also impactful program na nakakatulong sa mga communities natin,” Fajardo said in an interview.

The project “Campus Koneksyon: Broadcasting Synergy for Young Campus Broadcasters,” which spanned two months from December 2023 to January 2024, fulfilled its first phase with over 40 faculty members and student volunteers, 80 trainees, 11 training days, and two major press conferences during its venture.

“This year, for the second phase, we are targeting a more comprehensive and mas extensive hands-on training,” he added.

“Kita kung paano nagre-reflect kapag may enough support ‘yung nabibigay [ng university]. So, sana dito hindi lang siya dito maibigay sa amin–sa atin sa COC, sa DBC–sana mabigay din siya sa lahat ng mga orgs na nangangailangan pa para lalo silang makalabas at ma-extend ‘yung help na nabibigay nila at lumubog sa masa,” Umali shared as sentiments from the studentry.

The broadcast department was among 10 finalists in this year’s Lagerway Awards for Communication Excellence and was also an awardee in its third rendition. Previous PUPian finalists were the PUP College of Communication (COC), COC Dean Dr. Hemmady Mora, COC Prof. Jose Reuben Alagaran, COC instructor and award-winning news anchor Zhander Cayabyab, and BA Journalism alumnus John Alfred Esmilla.
