NEWS | SIKAT Awards holds first onsite ceremony since pandemic; highlights COCian achievers

After previous virtual commencements due to COVID-19 restrictions, the annual PUP College of Communication (COC) SIKAT Awards 2023 kicked off their ceremony at Tanghalang PUP, with students being merited for their outstanding efforts in previous semesters in and outside the university.

Graduating students from different departments were acknowledged for outstanding academic standing, with the Most Outstanding Graduating Students (MOGS) award given to Daniella Marie Geronimo (BAPR), John Lester Teña (BAJ), Conycel Ramirez (BACR), and Patricia Loise Labrador (BABr).

In addition, the Most Active Graduating Students (MAGS) award recipients were Daniella Marie Geronimo (BAPR), Patricia Loise Labrador (BABr), Diane Raine Sampang (BAJ), and Gianne Faye Macatangay (BACR).

Furthermore, Best in Thesis was accepted by graduating student researchers from each department, with several students being finalists at the recently concluded Philippine Journalism Research Conference (PJRC) 2023 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, last May 5.

This includes student finalists from the categories of journalism research, investigative journalism, special projects, and photo essays, which graduating journalism student Cris Vilchez championed against 12 participants from different universities.

Broadcasting students then introduced their short films, documentaries, vlogs, and podcasts in recognition of their works as nominees in the Department of Broadcast Communication's (DBC) festivals this year.

The SIKAT Award for Best Documentary Film was won by CineTrese Productions for their piece "Dalawang Dipang Langit sa Ilalim"; Best Interactive Media Content was given to "Huddle" by BABr 4-1D; Best Short Film was presented to 1/2N Studios for their film "Budol"; and Best Vlog was given to Karatula Productions for "TumFact o TumFail?".

Aside from DBC, the Department of Communication Research kicked off "People on the Streets Festivals," spotlighting third-year students' video pieces for their Marketing for Communication Research subject.

For PUP Content Video, the category winner was snatched by "Chibog Mo, Presyuhan Mo," the Independence Day Content was awarded to "Gaano Ka Kalaya?" and the Pride Month Content winner was "All for Love, Love for All" by BACR 3-1D.

The Department of Journalism (DOJ) also showcased student works for iCommunicate 2023, a developmental magazine of PUP COC, where "Odyssey" won Best in Layout and Design and Best in News Story Page; Best Cover to "Traverse"; and Best in Feature Story Page to "Arangkada".

Moreover, the DOJ's Best in Documentary accolades were given to "Silang Uhaw sa Linaw" (Fishery) and "Taltalon" (Crops) showcasing farmers as main case studies for their documentary.

The SIKAT Award for the Department of Advertising and Public Relations also featured students for their campaigns, with the previously successful 31st Grand AdClash 2023 last July 19, in which "Agtresibo" by BAPR 4-3D won first place.

Aside from special awards, the SIKAT Award for President's and Dean's Listers was also presented to students who excelled in the previous semesters.

The SIKAT Awards are one of the events in line with the 22nd Founding Anniversary of the PUP COC. The event kicked off with opening remarks from COC Dean Hemmady Mora.

"I am very proud of this college at ipagsisigawan ko sa buong PUP na ang College of Communication, which is a dream college of Sintang Paaralan," Dean Mora said.

The SIKAT Awards were spearheaded by Teatro Komunikado (TK) and hosted by PUP Broadcasting alumnus and ABS-CBN journalist Michael Delizo and TK member La Arnie Tagana.
