The short film “Bakit Maingay Ang EDSA?” by Carousel Productions recently won Best Film in the screening and awarding event of Film Aficionados Circle (FilAC)'s Sineminuto with the theme, “Buhayin at Lakbayin, Pelikulang Atin!” held at the Cinematheque Centre Manila on June 2, Friday.
The social drama tells the story of two homeless siblings–played by Ralph Capinig and Charlize Manabat–roaming around the titular highway with a dream: one who wants to study and another who wants to attain their basic needs and opportunity. The filmmakers mentioned that they chose EDSA as it symbolizes freedom as juxtaposition to the ‘oppressive’ system in our country.
“Bakit Maingay Ang EDSA?” also won minor awards including Best Sound Design, Best Male Performance for Capinig, Best Screenplay, and Best Concept, while bagging second placements in editing, cinematography, and direction.
Meanwhile, “The Portrait of a Man” by Nilay Productions won 2nd Best Film and snatched awards including Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Direction, and finished second in sound design and screenplay.
Finishing at third, “meet me halfway” by After Hours Production also won Best Cinematography, Best Female Performance for its lead Frances Danielle Tan, as well as second in production design.
Additionally, Loop Productions' "En Route,” the only horror short film in the fest, took the 2nd Best Concept award in the event.
The judging committee was composed of PUP TV production and scriptwriting professor George Gamayo, FilAC alumnus Edrian Pabona, photographer and filmmaker Arjanmar Rebeta, writer and producer Seymour Sanchez, and director and screenwriter Rod Marmol.
