The Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines—College of Communication (PUP-COC) inked an internship agreement and academic partnership on April 14 at Mateo Hall, PUP Main Campus.
The partnership between PSSC and PUP-COC seeks to support the internship programs of university students. In this way, the PSSC signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) stating that the institution will give the university students course-related work assignments and expose them to actual learning experiences.
In addition, both parties signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) where "the Parties recognise mutual benefit to their respective academic institutions and communities from working together and from a collaboration in the improvement of students and social scientists' learning experience."
By signing the MOU, both parties seek to achieve the following:
Collaborative research publications and joint grant applications;
Shared expertise for research projects and discussions as well as conversations on pressing research areas through webinars, colloquia, trainings, and conferences;
Joint workshops and talks through invited speakers and guest lectures;
Joint action, grassroot initiatives based on research data; and
Exchange of resources, such as books and other publications, digital materials, and knowledge among experts or scholars.
The two parties agreed to cooperate peacefully to achieve the successful operation of the partnership.
PSSC President Dr. Excelsa Tongson expressed her gratitude for stepping foot in PUP and the partnership between PUP-COC and PSSC.
"Makasisiguro po kayo na ang bawat araw at bawat engagement ay magiging makabuluhan at gagawin po namin ang lahat ng aming makakaya upang magkaroon po tayo ng sama-samang pagtulong upang i-promote ang ating functions, ‘yung teaching discipline extension," Tongson said on the signing ceremony.
She also conveyed her elation to PUP-COC for trusting them with the internship programs for COCians.
"I hope they will have a very fruitful engagement with us for perhaps 150 hours or more. They will learn so much about the discipline of social science and its relevance to family, community, and society," Tongson added.
Moreover, PUP Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) Dr. Emanuel De Guzman thanked PSSC for coming to PUP and their enthusiasm for inking ties with PUP-COC.
"It is our pleasure and happiness that we are brought here together by a common desire to improve ourselves and its disciplines, and collaborate, as you have already told us, by sending our students to some OJT (on-the-job training) — OJT 1 in your institutions," De Guzman remarked.
Meanwhile, COC Dean Dr. Hemmady Mora concluded the signing ceremony with her closing remarks.
"Thank you for considering PUP as a partner and a university you can collaborate with. Kami po ay excited na makita ang aming logo side-by-side sa logo po niyo sa collaborative activities and events in the future. And we also know na marami pong avenue where we can collaborate, hindi lang po sa mga internship ng mga bata, sabi nga po ni VP Ruby—even areas of research and also even po sa aming mga faculty," Mora said.
Various officials from PSSC and PUP attended the signing ceremony. Among the guests were PSSC Director Dr. Lourdes Portus, PSSC Head Wilson Villones, PUP Executive Vice President Prof. Alberto Guillo, Department of Communication Research Chairperson Dr. Rudolf Anthony Lacerna, COC Quality Assurance and OJT Coordinator Dr. Jim Duran, Department of Journalism Faculty Dr. Jose Reuben Alagaran II, Associate Professor Kriztine R.
